Mount M'goun Ascent 4 Days Discovery Trek - Central Atlas.  

The M'Goun mountain is a mountain located in the High Atlas mountain range in central Morocco. It has an elevation of 4,071 meters (13,356 feet) and is the second highest peak in the range after Toubkal, which is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and in North Africa. The M'Goun mountain is a popular destination for hiking and climbing, and it offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The mountain is located in the Gorges du M'Goun, a deep and narrow valley that runs through the High Atlas mountains. The M'Goun mountain is part of the Toubkal National Park, which is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including many species of birds, mammals, and reptiles.

M’Goun UNESCO Global Geopark is one of the most popular and interesting trekking valleys in Morocco. In this journey we will try to discover the must-see attractions of this High Atlas mountainous valley.

  • Day 1: Marrakech – The happy valley of Ait Bougmez − Azibs N’Ikkis (2300m).

    Transfer to Azilal, the last town before taking a small road to the deep valleys of the central High Atlas. Cross into the Aït Abbas valley by its first village Agouti, where we meet with the team of muleteers who will transport us from here on. Our trek to M'goun begins with a walk through beautiful Berber villages along the Arous valley's ridges. Overnight in tents near sheepfolds at 2,500 m. 3-hour walk including 700m climb.

  • Day 2: Azib n'Ikkis (2300m) – Tarkeddit pass (3400m) − Tarkeddit plateau (2900m)

    We hike up following the mule track, which takes us to Tizi n’Oughri pass (3400 m). Panoramic views of the vast northern slope of M'Goun, the Tarkeddit plateau and surrounding peaks of the High Atlas . After resting for 2 hours, we descend to our camp near the sources of the Tassaout (2900 m), where we had a cup of Moroccan tea under a marvelous night sky of the high Atlas Mountains.

     Night in tents. Duration: 6hours of walking. Elevation: 1050m ascent and 500m descent.

  • Day 3: Tarkeddit plateau − The ascent of M’goun (4068 m) – Oulilimt (2700m)

    Early wake up, have breakfast and prepare for the departure at 5 am. to cross the long ridge of the Ighil M'Goun, seeking to reach the summit of M'goun (4,068 m). Beautiful surrounding views of the central High Atlas mountains north ,and southward the Dades Valley and the Massif Saghro. Therefore downward the path in a corridor to reach camp near Oulilimt sheepfolds (2,700 m). 

     9 hour walk. 1168 m ascent and 1368 m descent. 

     NB: for those who do not wish to climb the M'goun, they join the path with the muleteers. Night under tents.

  • Day 4: Oulilimt (2600m) − Col des Ait Imi 2905 m – The Ait Bougmez valley – Transfer to Marrakech

    We leave this region frequently occupied by nomadic families with their herds. We climb to the Col Ait Imi (2905 m), which offers a panoramic view of all the surrounding mountains and the one of Massif Mgoun. After enjoying that view, we head down for lunch in relaxing shades. After greeting our mule team, we take a several hour-long transfer to Marrakech.
